What is ESI ?

Employees’ state Insurance Corporation of India, is a multidimensional social system tailored to provide socio-economic protection to worker population and immediate dependent or family covered under the scheme.

All employees earning INR 21,000 or less per month as wages fall under this scheme. The contribution payable to the Corporation in respect of an employee shall comprise of employer’s contribution and employee’s contribution at a specified rate. The rates are revised from time to time. Currently, the employee’s contribution rate is 1.75% of the wages and that of employer’s is 4.75% of the wages paid/payable in respect of the employees in every wage period.

    • A list of employees with their monthly compensation, in detail;
    • A list of directors, partners and shareholders of the company;
    • The PAN card of the business and address proof of the establishment/firm
    • Copy of bank statements/cancelled cheque of the organization

Any factory or business establishment having 10 or more than 10 employees, irrespective of salary, have to register with ESIC. ESI contributions must be made for all employees having a salary of less than Rs.21,000 per month. Following industries are required to obtain coverage under ESIC:
1. Factories employing 10 or more persons irrespective of whether power is used in the process of manufacturing or not.
2. Shops, hotels, restaurants, cinemas including preview theater, road motor transport undertakings and newspaper establishment employing 10/20 or more persons.
3. Private Medical and Educational Institutions employing 10/20 or more persons in certain States.

Yes, it is the statutory responsibility of the employer under Section 2A of the Act read with Regulation 10-B, to register their Factory/ Establishment under the ESI Act within 15 days from the date of its applicability to them.

It is a 17 digit unique identification number allotted to each of the factory/establishment registered under the provisions of the Act. Such a number is generated through ESIC portal on submission of the pertinent information by the employer

Once a factory or an Establishment is covered under the Act, it continues to be covered notwithstanding the fact that the number of persons/coverable employees employed therein at any time falls below the required limit or there is a change in the manufacturing activity.

Contribution shall be paid in respect of an employee in a bank duly authorized by the Corporation within 15 days of the last day of the calendar month in which the contribution falls due for any wage period.
